Roughly bordered by Oxford Street, Regent Street, Coventry Street and Charing Cross Road, Soho is the liveliest square mile in London.

In the Middle Ages, Soho was an area used for farming. Henry VIII then acquired the wooded parkland in the 1530s and it became hunting space for London aristocracy. It is from these times that the area gleans its name: ‘Soho! Soho!’ was an Anglo-Norman hunting cry used to call in the hounds in pursuit of their game.

Until the Great Fire of London, 1666, Soho was largely fields with a few cottages in the Wardour Street area. By the 1670s, the hunting ground began to disappear as the foundations were laid for the Soho we recognise today.

Around this time, French Huguenots arrived to escape persecution. Greek Christians fleeing the Ottomans also arrived and were soon followed by Poles, Italians and Russians. Many of these arrivals were skilled craftspeople and ground floor buildings soon turned into shops, studios and cafes.
