At 6'4” and 16 stone, Joachim Ritter was not the ideal build for a Super Bike racer. This did not stop him from trying though and between 2001 and 2005, supported by Dave Carnell and HM Racing, he clocked up numerous race wins, over thirty podium finishes and held a lap record on the Brands Indy circuit.
2006 unfortunately required a year away from racing after a couple of heavy crashes led to some much-needed surgery and recovery time.
In 2007 however, following a couple of laps of the Nurburgring in his car, Joachim decided that he had to take care of some unfinished business. Realising that he might actually have a better chance in a car, due to weight and size being less of an issue, he contacted the UK's number one driver coach, Eugene O'Brien.
The first step was to pass his ARDS test for his National B license and receive help converting his two-wheel experience to four wheels. After only four track days, O'Brien was so impressed with his progress that he gave Joachim the chance to partner him in a four-hour endurance race at Snetterton in the well respected Uniroyal Fun Cup. They won and then Ritter completed his second race at Oulton park (again in the Uniroyal Fun Cup) where he and O'Brien seized another victory.
In 2008, current BTCC racer Rick Kerry took on Joachim under the AFM racing banner after the recommendation by O'Brien. Rick and his team are preparing and supporting Ritter's car for the highly competitive National Kumho BMW Championship.
After a successful test with 2007 Max5 Champion, Paul Sheard (team Sheard Autos), Ritter secured a spot in the team and will be competing in the Max5 championship: arguably one of the UK's hardest race series.
Joachim will also continue to work with Eugene O'Brien and will be competing in selected Uniroyal Cup rounds.
